Building Model Planes
Making model planes or aero modelling can be great fun.
You will have the satisfaction of building and test flying your own model planes, you will learn how and why aeroplanes fly.
Flying model planes are built from a light but strong wood called Balsa Wood, which is specially cut into various standard size sheets, strips and block form for model plane construction.
The wood is then cut to size and shaped using a sharp modelling knife and steel ruler. Construction is completed by using quick drying Balsa Cement to keep the model plane components together.
Starting with a simple model plane like a glider, the wings and tail wings of model planes are made from all sheet balsa. The fuselage or body is cut from lengths of balsa strip
Models have all the control surfaces a full sized plane would have, for example, Ailerons, Rudders and Elevators.
Control surfaces are hinged using fuse wire or soft iron florists wire, so that control surfaces can be moved into various positions to simulate flight patterns, and the effects of adjusting these control surfaces can be seen in flight.
